The GSG-9 der Bundespolizei is an elite German special forces counter-terrorism policing unit.  It was created as a police rather than a military unit to get round the fact that German federal law prohibits the use of military forces against the civilian population.  As it is part of the police and under the control of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, it has all the usual policing powers including the power of arrest.  The GSG-9 uses an array of militarised weaponry.
